Cursed

Cursed is a 2005 horror film by director Wes Craven and screenwriter Kevin Williamson, the creators of Scream. The plot focuses on three young adults who are attacked by a werewolf loose in Los Angeles. They must find and kill their attacker, or suffer a fate worse than death. The movie premiered on November 7, 2004, at the American Film Market and was released theatrically in 2005. It was filmed in Los Angeles, California, United States, with special effects shot in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

It starts when two friends, Jenny Tate (Mya) and Becky Morton (Shannon Elizabeth), are at a pier and decide to get their fortune told by Zela (Portia de Rossi). She foretells death and horror soon, but they don’t believe her and walk away laughing. A little while later, Jenny realizes Becky has disappeared and can’t find her on the pier. Becky was driving. One night, while in a car together, Jimmy (Jesse Eisenberg) and his sister Ellie (Christina Ricci) hit an animal and another car. They attempt to rescue the other driver, Becky Morton, who is dragged off and eaten. Jimmy and Ellie are both slashed by the creature’s claws. Jimmy starts to believe that the creature was a werewolf, but no one will believe him. He and his sister start to exhibit wolfish tendencies, but Ellie denies it, apparently proving her point by touching a silver picture frame and not getting burned. Jimmy becomes much stronger, as shown when a bully named Bo forces him to join the wrestling team. He easily defeats three wrestlers, including Bo.

Meanwhile, Jenny Tate is torn apart in a parking garage by a wolf-like creature. Zela’s prediction for Jenny and Becky comes true. Eventually Ellie starts to believe the werewolf idea, and Jimmy proves it when he holds a silver cake server and gets burned. He goes to warn Ellie with the help of Bo, who shows up at their house to admit to Jimmy that he’s gay and apparently likes Jimmy. Bo and Jimmy race to the place where Ellie is, and in the meantime she figures out that her boyfriend Jake is a werewolf. He confirms that but claims it wasn’t him that attacked her and Jimmy. Another werewolf attacks, seemingly proving his story. Bo and Jimmy try to help, but Bo is knocked out. The new werewolf is revealed to be Joanie, a publicist who had a one night stand with Jake and became a werewolf. She wants revenge by killing all of the other girls he dates. He refuses to let her hurt Ellie, and she knocks him out. Joanie soon turns into a werewolf and starts attacking. Ellie and Jimmy fight her, and she finally runs and hides when the police arrive. The two draw her out by insulting her. The police open fire, apparently killing her. The only way to kill a werewolf is to separate the brain from the heart. As she rises again, a cop shoots her in the head, finally killing her. Bo is okay, but Jake has disappeared.

Jimmy and Ellie return to a wrecked home. Their dog bit Jimmy and became a werewolf as well and destroyed the house in an uncontrollable rage. As Jimmy goes to try to fix the power, Jake arrives. He reveals that he did in fact bite Ellie and Jimmy, and he wants Ellie to live forever by his side after he kills Jimmy. She refuses, and the two fight it out, but her werewolf side only emerges and disappears at small intervals, while he has complete control over his werewolf side and dominates the fight. Jimmy joins in, climbing across the ceiling and biting Jake, distracting him long enough for Ellie to stab him with the silver cake server, badly injuring him. Ellie decapitates Jake with a shovel and breaking the curse on her, Jimmy and their dog. A girl Jimmy likes named Brooke shows up with their dog, having learned where they live from Bo, who also shows up. Bo and Jimmy are now friends. Jimmy kisses Brooke and walks her home along with Bo. Ellie goes to clean up the mess that is their house.

Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning is the prequel to Ginger Snaps and Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed. The final part of the Ginger Snaps trilogy takes place in 19th century Canada, following the exploits of the antecedents of the Fitzgerald sisters of the two previous movies: Ginger (Katharine Isabelle) and Brigitte (Emily Perkins), who are identical in all respects to their modern-day counterparts.

Fort Bailey, a trading fort in the western Canadian wilderness. Each spring a party of thirty six men from the fort travelled to Hudson’s Bay in boats laden with pelts. The men returned in Autumn with provisions to see the fort through the harsh winter. In 1815 the party never returned. With the men two months overdue, the freshly orphaned Fitzgerald sisters (their parents having drowned), stranded in the wilderness, are brought to the fort by a resident Indian Hunter. The men there are suspicious of them, but, reluctantly, the sisters are permitted to stay.

Van Helsing

Van Helsing is a 2004 American action/horror film about vampire hunter Gabriel Van Helsing, written and directed by Stephen Sommers. The film stars Hugh Jackman and Kate Beckinsale. The film opened on May 7, 2004.

Based on a version of the character of Abraham Van Helsing from Bram Stoker’s novel Dracula, the film also incorporates characters from other works such as the film The Wolf Man into the narrative, and draws particularly on literary classics of the gothic horror canon such as Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein.

The film begins in black and white, set in Transylvania, 1887. Doctor Victor Frankenstein brings to life the Frankenstein’s Monster but his triumph is cut short when an angry mob infiltrates the castle. Dr. Frankenstein has been aided in his experiments by his deformed assistant Igor, and Count Dracula. Dracula reveals that he helped Frankenstein so he could use the Monster for his own purposes, later revealed to be using the Monster to bring his undead children to life. Frankenstein refuses to help Dracula and tries to kill him, only to discover the Count is already dead. Dracula kills Frankenstein, but the Monster breaks free, knocks Dracula into a fireplace and escapes to a windmill with his “father’s” body. The mob pursues him and burns down the windmill. The Monster and Frankenstein fall into the ruins of the windmill and disappear. Dracula (who survived the fireplace) and his three brides, Verona, Marishka and Aleera, arrive at the remains, their plans seemingly lost.

The film then leaps forward one year and changes to color, introducing Van Helsing a monster hunter who works for the Knights of the Holy Order at Vatican City.

After unintentionally killing Mr. Hyde in Paris, Van Helsing returns to the Vatican where he is assigned his next mission by a priest. He is sent to Transylvania to help the last of the Valerius family, Anna, to destroy Dracula; otherwise many generations of the family will never go to Heaven. This is because one of Anna’s ancestors vowed that his family would never rest in peace until Dracula is dead. Anna’s brother, Velkan Valerious, actively searches for various monsters. He is bitten and turns into a werewolf.

Van Helsing takes Carl with him, an intelligent but bumbling friar who doesn’t really mind blaspheming (as he swears several times and later sleeps with a Transylvanian woman). The two arrive in a town, where they meet Anna, who is the last Velarius after her brother Velkan fell into a river whilst fighting a werewolf. The three brides attack the town, but Van Helsing kills Marishka by firing arrows covered in holy water at her. Anna reluctantly accepts Van Helsing’s help and takes him to her castle home. That night, a werewolf shows up. He is revealed to be Velkan, bitten by the previous wolf. Velkan retreats to Frankenstein Castle with Van Helsing and Anna in pursuit, the werewolf killing a creepy gravedigger in the process. Velkan is strapped into a special device by Dracula, in order for Velkan to act as a conductor for electricity to bring Dracula’s children to life. The process works briefly, but the children begin to die shortly after birth. Anna releases Velkan but he becomes a werewolf again. Van Helsing meets Dracula, who addresses him as “Gabriel”. Van Helsing tries to stab him with a stake and burn him with a holy cross, but neither harm him.

Van Helsing and Anna escape but fall into an underground cavern, discovering the Frankenstien Monster hiding from Dracula. Anna suggests killing the Monster, but Van Helsing decides to take him to Rome to protect him from Dracula. Picking up Carl, the group (Van Helsing, Anna, Carl and the Monster) head off in horse-drawn carriages. However, the remaining brides and the Velkan werewolf chase after them. The carriage falls down a ravine, the brides pursuing it but discovering it is a decoy with a box of stakes inside. The carriage hits the ground and explodes, catapulting the stakes in all directions, some of which impale Verona and kill her. The real carriage containing the group nearly gets away, but the werewolf appears and set the carriage on fire. Van Helsing fires his shotguns on the werewolf and kills him. Anna finds Velkan shortly before he dies; she also discovers Van Helsing was bitten in the process and will become a werewolf. Anna is then kidnapped by Aleera, who bargains with Anna for the Monster. Instead, Van Helsing knocks the Monster out and places him in a tomb to keep him from being stolen. Van Helsing and Carl sneak into Dracula’s summer palace where a ball is occurring. Van Helsing rescues Anna from being bitten, but discovers the Monster has been captured by the undead, who are then sent after Van Helsing and the others. The undead are destroyed by a weapon created by Carl that releases a bright exploding lightsource.

The trio returns to Anna’s castle and piece together that Dracula was killed in the 1400s, made a deal with the Devil and became a vampire; Dracula is actually the son of Anna’s ancestor; and the only way to kill Dracula is by using a werewolf. The group then discover the door to Dracula’s lair: a large map owned by Anna’s deceased father. A missing piece is in the possession of Van Helsing, who received it from the Vatican priest. The three travel through the door and find an icy fortress: Dracula’s lair.

Inside, Van Helsing sees the Monster, who explains that Dracula has a werewolf cure. Anna and Carl force a captured Igor to take them to the cure, but are attacked by Aleera. Carl heads off with the cure to find Van Helsing, who must kill Dracula and receive the cure before the final stroke of midnight, or he will permanently become a werewolf. Carl is pursued by Igor, who attacks him with a tazer-like weapon. Van Helsing manages to free the Monster but not before Dracula’s children are brought to life. Dracula attacks Van Helsing, transforming into a demonic winged vampire. The Monster falls off a tower and is propelled through the air on a wire, which collides with Igor, sending him plummeting down a ravine to his demise. The Monster distracts Aleera, allowing Anna to escape. However, this distraction lasts for only so long when Aleera confronts Anna. Anna stabs Aleera with a concealed stake, killing her. Van Helsing, transformed into a werewolf, fights Dracula until the full moon is blocked out by clouds. Dracula takes this opportunity to reveal that Van Helsing is the Left Hand of God, another name for Gabriel, and it was he who killed him in the 1400s. Dracula attempts to get Van Helsing to be his partner. Van Helsing refuses, returns to werewolf form when the moon comes out again, and kills Dracula by biting his neck. Dracula and his children all die. Anna rushes in with the cure, after receiving it from Carl, and races to save Van Helsing, but he attacks and kills her in werewolf form. However, she has managed to inject him with the cure. Restored to humanity, he holds her body in his arms.

Van Helsing and Carl cremate Anna’s body by the ocean shore, honoring Anna’s unfulfilled desire to see the ocean. Van Helsing briefly sees a vision of Anna and her family in Heaven, before he and Carl head off back to Rome. The Monster, having survived, rows off on a raft to an unknown future.

Underworld

Underworld is a 2003 action-horror film about the secret history of Vampires and a type of werewolf known as Lycans (an abbreviated form of lycanthrope). It is the first film in the Underworld series. The main plot revolves around Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire who is a “Death Dealer“, or Lycan hunter, due to her hatred for the whole species. She finds herself attracted to a human, Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman) who is being targeted by the Lycans. After Michael is bitten by a Lycan, Selene must decide whether to do her “duty” and kill him or go against her clan and save him.

While reviewers generally gave the film a negative reception, criticizing the lack of character development and overacting, a smaller number of reviewers praised elements such as the film’s stylish Gothic visuals, the “icy English composure” in Kate Beckinsale’s performance, and the extensively worked-out vampire-werewolf mythology that serves as the film’s backstory.

Perched on the ledge of a building in a rainy night, two black-garbed vampires known as “Death Dealers” track a pair of werewolves who are walking on the street below in their human form. The vampires, Selene and Rigel, specialize in assassinating an ancient species of werewolves known as Lycans. Selene’s motivation goes beyond duty; she also wants revenge, for she believes that Lycans slaughtered her family when she was a child. The vampires believe that they defeated the werewolves many centuries ago and killed their leader, Lucian, and that they must now kill off the survivors. As the vampires follow the Lycans into a subway station, the werewolves open fire with submachine guns. In the chaotic shootout, Selene realizes that the Lycans may have been following a human, Michael Corvin, which would be very unusual. After the Lycans retreat from Selene’s barrage of machine pistol fire, she tracks them to their lair, where she hears loud howling and finds out that the Lycans have developed a new high-tech bullet to kill the vampires.

When Selene arrives at the vampire coven’s ornate, gated mansion, she recounts the evening’s events, and urges an attack on the Lycans, but the vampire regent Kraven tells her to drop the matter. Selene secretly continues her investigation, to find out why the Lycans were chasing a human. Meanwhile, in an underground Lycan lair, a scientist named Singe is testing blood from kidnapped descendants of the Corvinus family, to try to find a pure source of the ancient and powerful Corvinus blood type. Soon after Selene finds Michael, the pair are attacked by werewolves, including Lucian, the original Lycan leader, who still lives. After Lucian bites Michael on the shoulder, Selene helps Michael to escape, and the two become romantically attracted to each other.

Meanwhile, Selene finds out that when Lucian was killed, Kraven was the only witness. Fearful that Kraven and Lucian are in a conspiracy, she wakes a powerful elder vampire Viktor, who has been in hibernation. Selene tells Michael about the feud and her past. After Lycans attack Selene captures Singe, the scientist; unbeknownst to her, Michael is captured by Lycans. Selene brings back the wounded Singe, who admits to Viktor that the Lycans have been trying combine the bloodlines of the two species with the Corvinus Strain to create a powerful Vampire-Lycan hybrid. After Kraven flees the mansion (because Singe reveals that Kraven and Lucian are working together), news arrives that the female elder coming to wake Marcus has been killed by Lycans. Viktor kills Singe and instructs Selene to kill Michael.

Meanwhile, in the Lycan lair where Michael is being held captive, he learns that long ago, Lucian took Viktor’s daughter as his bride. When Viktor learned of her pregnancy, he killed her to prevent any crossing of the two species, which led to the war. After Viktor admits to slaughtering Selene’s family, and battles with Michael, who has transformed to a Lycan-Vampire hybrid Selene slices Viktor’s head in two. Selene and Michael flee the Lycan lair, now an enemy from both Lycan and Vampire covens. Back at the mansion, Singe’s blood seeps through the trapdoor of the sarcophagus of the remaining elder, Marcus, a carrier of the original Corvinus Strain
