Skinwalkers is a Canadian horror-action film about werewolves, and was released in the United States on August 10, 2007. Directed by James Isaac, it stars Jason Behr, Elias Koteas, Rhona Mitra, and Tom Jackson. The film was originally announced for theatrical release on December 1, 2006, but was later pushed to March 30, 2007, and July 27, and finally August 10.

Skinwalkers marks Lions Gate Entertainment’s first collaboration with Constantin Films, which produced such other science fiction/horror films as Resident Evil, Resident Evil: Apocalypse, and Wrong Turn. The visual effects are by effects house Mr. X, and the creature effects by Stan Winston Studio.

The film was shot in Ontario, Canada.

Two packs of werewolves, divided by principles, are signaled by the moon of the coming of an ancient prophecy. A young boy named Timothy (Matthew Knight) approaches his 13th birthday, unaware this marks the time of his transformation. Timothy has been raised by his grandmother Nana (Barbara Gordon), his mother Rachel (Rhona Mitra), his uncle Jonas (Elias Koteas), his cousin Katherine (Sarah Carter) and Katherine’s boyfriend, Adam (Shawn Roberts). His father is said to be dead.

Rachel and Timothy have been unaware that the rest of the family are “good” werewolves who have guarded Timothy and his secret since birth. They know that Timothy is a “half-blood” who is prophesied to end the curse. But they also know that Timothy’s power will put him in danger, for there are other werewolves that revel and embrace their blood-lust and are bent on finding and killing the boy. Four of these werewolves are a motorcycle pack — leader Varek (Jason Behr), and cohorts Zo (Kim Coates), Sonya (Natassia Malthe), and Grenier (Rogue Johnston), who uses a hawk as an airborne spy — who track down Timothy in the small town of Huguenot, precipitating the movie’s extended chase.

Varek discovers the location of Timothy via a video tape which is shown to various “good” werewolves that he is alive and well. Reaching Huguenot, Varek saw Nana and Timothy and proceeds with a gunfight between his pack against the “good” werewolves and various townspeople. Adam’s father is killed in the gunfight and Nana sacrifices herself to let Timothy and the others escape. Jonas explain the whole situation to both Rachel and Timothy and they are convinced after Jonas and others turn into werewolves at night.

The next day, Timothy goes down with a seizure and is sent to a nearby hospital. Varek’s gang infiltrate the hospital and attack Timothy. Grenier is killed by Adam while Katherine is being held hostage by Varek. It is subsequently revealed that Varek was Caleb, Rachel’s husband and Timothy’s father, and his transformation was due to him feeding on humans.

After escaping to a safe place, Adam goes off on his own and finds Katherine and brings her back. At sundown, Katherine was discovered to have been forced to feed on humans and kills Adam with his own gun. Just as Katherine is about to attack Timothy, Jonas manages to kill her with a gunshot in the back.

They manage to find their next safe place, with Rachel and Timothy hiding in a steel cage while Jonas sets out to ambush Varek, Zo & Sonya. Zo is killed after being trapped and being dropped down from a height. Sonya tries to attack Rachel and Timothy but is shot by Timothy. Rachel then proceeds to finish Sonya off. Varek then tries to kill Timothy but is stopped by Jonas. They get into a struggle and in a bid to win Varek, Jonas feeds on Varek’s arm and knocks Varek unconscious. Taken over by the blood frenzy, Jonas attacks Timothy and is shot to death by Rachel. Varek wakes up and bites Timothy but the clock chimes midnight. He is then shot by Rachel and knocked down to the ground. He then transforms back into a human and to his former self, Caleb.

It is later revealed that Timothy is the cure via his blood and that they travel around, giving the cure to those who want it. They also fill bullets with Timothy’s blood. The film leaves off with Timothy saying “For some I am salvation, for the others their destruction”.

Blood and Chocolate

Blood & Chocolate is a 2007 film directed by Katja von Garnier, produced by Lakeshore Entertainment and distributed by MGM. It is very loosely based on the eponymous young-adult novel of the same name by Annette Curtis Klause, which was adapted into a screenplay by Ehren Kruger. The movie was released on DVD on June 13, 2007 in the USA.

Vivian’s lycanthropic family was killed in America 10 years ago when she was 9 years old, after which she moved back to Bucharest, Romania to live with her aunt Astrid. Astrid is a former mate of the pack’s leader, Gabriel, and together they have a son named Rafe. According to pack law, the leader chooses a new mate every seven years. The choosing is a few months away and Gabriel wants Vivian as his mate, despite her reluctance. This is because of a prophecy which states that a female loup-garoux from the line of leaders will someday lead all loup-garoux into the age of hope. Gabriel thinks this loup-garoux will be Vivian, and for this reason he has chosen her for his “bride”.

While sitting one night in an abandoned church that celebrated the loup-garoux (having broken into it) she meets a human, Aiden, who is an artist (who also broke into the church for inspiration for his graphic novel series) researching the legend of the loup-garoux/or garouxone. Aiden is instantly smitten and pursues her for several days before she finally agrees to start seeing him. They meet in secret and fall in love. They are soon discovered by Vivian’s cousin Rafe and his four friends, who grew up with Vivian; throughout the movie Rafe and his friends are referred to as the Five. After Rafe tells Gabriel about the relationship, he orders Rafe to do whatever is necessary to get Aiden out of the city- even if it means death threats and bribing.

Rafe sends Aiden a note, pretending it is from Vivian and asking him to meet her in a chapel outside the city. After Rafe threatens him, Aiden throws him into the table where he cuts himself. Rafe’s spilling of blood forces his eyes to turn gold and reveal his loup-garoux side. He attempts to kill Aiden, however silver is fatal to the loup-garoux and can poison them when mixes with their blood (fire is the only other way to kill them). Aiden uses his silver medallion necklace to kill Rafe, in self-defense. (Aiden was trained by his “addicted, Army Ranger father” in self-defense, which obviously comes in handy.)

Gabriel and Astrid are devastated at the death of their son, and Aiden is caught by other loup-garoux at the train station (presumably to leave the country). Every month at full moon, the pack leads a hunt in the forest. The human prey is chosen because they are a danger to the pack or because they’ve offended one of its members (the first victim witnessed is a drug dealer). If the human manages to cross the river in the forest, they’re allowed to live, but no one has ever managed to reach the river. Aiden is chosen to be that moon cycle’s prey because he killed Rafe and he runs for his life. He cleverly spreads his blood around on the trees to confuse the hunting loup-garoux and buy some time (at the beginning of the “hunt” the prey is cut so that there is a blood scent to track). Fortunately, he’d stolen a silver knife from a restaurant earlier, and when two wolves corner him he is able to defend himself. He reaches the river and with great difficulty crosses it, however Gabriel is furious and breaks his own law, he follows Aiden and attacks. Vivian jumps in and she and Gabriel fight in their wolf forms; Vivian wins by pushing him into the river. Aiden attacks her, not recognizing her in her wolf skin, and slashes her arm with the knife. When she changes back into her human self she reveals who she is, he is stricken with guilt and is eager to help her.

They flee to a building where films were once processed, because it is riddled with silver dust the loup-garoux would not dare enter to find them. After a few tender moments Astrid appears. Realizing where Vivian had gone, she confronts them with a gun. Vivian pleads for Aiden’s life, reminding Astrid of how important it is to be with someone you love, and Astrid (who is in love with Gabriel even though he no longer wants her for his mate) lets them free. They retrieve an antidote for Vivian by threatening a human pharmacist who is owned by Gabriel, but the man manages to alert the pack to their presence. Vivian fights to protect Aiden but she is captured.

In the wolves’ territory (a bar that is frequented by the pack), Gabriel decides that he and Vivian shall hunt (each other), but Aiden – watching from a skylight above) shoots him. A few of Gabriel’s hitmen shoot him down into the building and a massive fight begins. During the shooting, several kegs and bottles of alcohol (Absinthe) shatter and their contents spill onto the floor and Aiden sets the building on fire. Gabriel attacks Aiden but before he can strike a possibly fatal blow, Vivian aims a gun at Gabriel. He insults her by telling her how she is becoming that hunter on that snowy night and kill on of her family. Gabriel shifts into his wolf form and faces Vivian. Aiden pleads with Vivian to shoot Gabriel, to which she replies many times, “I can’t.” When Gabriel goes to attack Aiden, Vivian shoots him. Vivian feels guilty for having killed Gabriel, as a tear rolls down her cheek and she strokes Gabriel’s fur. She helps the other loup-garou who had been chasing her, escape from the fire and she and Aiden run away together.

The last scene is of them sitting in Gabriel’s car and driving out of the city, as they drive, several people in the streets show their throats (as submissive wolves do) to the car (either because they believe it is Gabriel, or because Vivian is now the pack leader having killed Gabriel). They discuss a trip to Paris, as the film closes with them driving under Bucharest’s Arcul de Triumf (modeled after Paris’ Arc de Triomphe).

Underworld: Evolution

Underworld: Evolution is the second film in the Underworld series, following Underworld in 2003. Evolution continues the feud between Vampires and Lycans, but highlights glimpses of their origins some centuries ago.

Underworld Evolution is an immediate follow-up to Underworld. Therefore, the events of Evolution begin during the same night of the first film’s finale, and ends only one night later. It has several more constructive plot elements than its predecessor.

The movie opens in the year 1202 AD in which an army led by three vampire elders (Markus, Viktor, and Amelia) arrives at a ravaged village. The vampire army is attacked by Lycans, and a battle erupts. Viktor and Amelia capture Markus’s brother William Corvinus, the first and most powerful werewolf. Viktor orders that William be imprisoned in a secret location forever.

The story then continues the present-day timeline, starting immediately after the events of the first film. Selene takes Michael to a vampire safe house so that she can return to the mansion to confront Kraven, the traitor from the first movie. However, Singe’s blood has already awakened Markus, who wipes out the entire remnant of Kraven and his men and the mansion as retribution for Viktor’s treachery. He learns Selene and Michael’s location from camera surveillance of various safe houses and leaves to track them down. When confronted by Markus, Selene defends her actions, and Markus agrees that Viktor got what he deserved. However, he believes Selene is hiding something and attacks her; Michael intervenes and protects her. Markus tries and fails to get hold of the pendant that the two have in their possession, which they were given by Lucian. They escape and seek refuge in an abandoned warehouse. During that time, they make love to one another.

Meanwhile, Lorenz Macaro, an elderly and imposing man, sends in a team of “Cleaners” to investigate the aftermath from the final battle in the first movie. When Macaro examines Viktor’s body he finds a metal disk attached to his ribcage similar to Sonja’s pendant, which Selene and Michael possessed. Now knowing that the pendant is of some importance to Markus, Michael and Selene set out to solve its mystery. Selene recalls that she’d seen it as a child, but doesn’t know its significance. To find answers, they travel to the hideout of Andreas Tanis, who is an exiled vampire historian and old enemy of Selene, as she was the one who exiled him. After dispatching the various Lycans and Vampires guarding Tanis, they confront him and discover that Tanis had been secretly trading vampire-killing weapons with Lycans and forces him to tell them as much as he can.

Tanis reveals that Markus, not Viktor, was the first vampire. One of the two sons of Alexander Corvinus, he was bitten by a bat and became a vampire; his twin brother, William Corvinus, was bitten by a wolf and became a Lycan. Unlike later Lycans, William and the Lycans created by him are entirely animal and unable to take human form again. Due to William’s wanton destructiveness, Markus approached Viktor, a warlord dying of old age, and offered to turn him and his army into immortal vampires in exchange for tracking down and stopping William. As seen in the film’s opening flashback, Markus intended to capture his brother and tame him, but Viktor betrays Markus and orders William locked away forever. Viktor is ultimately falsely regarded as the first vampire and is happy to assume this role as both William and Markus are in hibernation. He does not kill the brothers because he believes doing so would result in the immediate extinction of all other vampires and Lycans. Killing William would mean Viktor would lose his slaves and killing Markus would kill Viktor himself. Tanis also reveals that Selene’s father was the architect who built William’s prison and that the pendant is a key. Viktor thought that her family knew too much about its location, so he killed and fed on them and then turned Selene into a vampire. Tanis then refers Selene and Michael to Lorenz Macaro, stating he can help stop Markus. Shortly after they leave, Markus arrives and questions Tanis. He then kills Tanis to absorb his memories.

Selene and Michael go to see Lorenz Macaro, whom Selene realizes is actually Alexander Corvinus, Markus and William’s father and the oldest of the immortals. He reveals he has devoted his life to containing the vampire-lycan war away from the mortal world. However, Alexander refuses to help kill Markus as he is his son. Their debate is stopped when Markus attacks the boat. He learns the location of William’s hidden prison by drinking Selene’s blood and proceeds to kill Michael and mortally wound Alexander to obtain the other half of the pendant. Markus reveals that he wishes to become a god and rule a race of Hybrids. Once Markus has left, Selene talks with the dying Alexander and he has her drink his blood, stating that by doing so she will become ‘the future’.

Selene leads the cleaners to the prison to confront and destroy Markus, but Markus has already freed William. A battle ensues in which Selene and the Cleaners seem to be losing. William bites the Cleaners and begins turning them into Lycans. Michael, presumed to be dead inside his bodybag, suddenly regenerates and joins the fight in his Hybrid form. Michael ultimately kills William, while Selene then kills Markus. Michael and Selene, the only survivors, stand in the morning sun. Selene reveals that she is no longer harmed by ultraviolet light. As the film ends, Selene narrates that she fears the days ahead, but is nevertheless hopeful.
